Coweta’s National Night Out on Tuesday

by Wes Mayer

Today, Cowetans can enjoy a night out against crime while shopping or strolling along Bullsboro Drive’s many stores and supermarkets.

In the next couple of weeks, Georgia will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of National Night Out, an event promoting safety and crime prevention throughout the United States and Canada. On Tuesday starting at 4 p.m. and going into the evening, Coweta County public safety will be participating in this nation-wide night out.

“The evening is to encourage the public to get out and enjoy the evening in a safe environment,” Newnan Police Department Deputy Chief Rodney Riggs said.

According to Riggs, Coweta County has participated in the National Night Out five times. This year, the Newnan Police Department, Newnan Fire Department and Coweta County Sheriff’s Office will have displays set up at the BJ’s and Kroger stores on Bullsboro Drive.

The public safety departments will be handing out brochures about the neighborhood watch, home safety, children’s safety, anti-drug safety and more. Other local stores will have displays, snack foods and fun activities.

National Night Out is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, and first started on August 7, 1984 with 2.5 million participants, according to a press release from the Georgia Senate Press Office. That number has increased to 37 million participants throughout 15,000 communities in the U.S. and Canada.

According to the Georgia Senate Press, the National Night Out is a great chance for communities to show public safety personnel their support and for public safety to let the community know their seriousness in fighting and preventing crime.
