This view of the Newnan Centre meeting facility at the time of its grand opening in mid-June shows the covered walkway, in the distance left, that connects to the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts.

In the month since it opened, the Newnan Centre held its first events and is close to being finished.

“We’re just about done,” said Newnan Convention Center Authority Chairman Parks Avery at Thursday evening’s monthly meeting. “We’re finding little pieces that need to be fixed.”

Even though some areas are not completed, its commercial kitchen and main ballroom are operational. Still to be completed are the pavilion and covered walkway connecting the Newnan Centre to the Coweta County Board of Education’s Centre for Performing and Visual Arts, and the amphitheater is awaiting a few final touches.

The convention center authority is also working on a second driveway entrance off Lower Fayetteville Road for the property. Foresite Group won the design contract, and their design includes a roundabout or traffic circle.

“They are proposing to locate a roundabout slightly south of the entrance,” said Newnan Centre Executive Director Carol Moore. “It should improve traffic flow on the road.”

In their proposal, Foresite Group will ensure the circle won’t impact walking trails around the performing arts centre as well as any future expansion of Lower Fayetteville Road. A proposal will be presented to the Newnan City Council at their 6:30 p.m. meeting July 23.

The authority also discussed the ongoing plan to have a hotel near the facility. Parks said that he’s talking with a developer about the project.

“He seems very interested in making this happen,” said Parks. “It’s still moving along.”

In other business:

• The authority approved a petty cash fund for the Newnan Centre for small purchases.

• Moore gave reports on lost business because of insufficient space, occupancy for the month of June, and upcoming events. She noted that the wedding market for the facility is strong.
