2000th guest tours Grantville

by Celia Shortt

Since starting tours of locales used for filming in Grantville of AMC show “The Walking Dead,” 2,000 guests have now taken a tour in the city of Grantville. Recently, Grantville Mayor Jim Sells saw tourism as a way to increase revenue in Grantville.

In March, the "The Walking Dead" aired its episode titled "Clear," which was filmed entirely in Grantville. Locations included in the episode were Sells' home and the historic freight depot in downtown. Sells' apartment was made into the home of Morgan, one of the characters on the show.

The freight depot was transformed into the King County Cafe. Throughout the episode, viewers also saw some of the unique buildings located in Grantville, including the roofless ruins of the city's former cotton mill.

Since that episode aired, tourists from other states and even other countries have been traveling to Grantville to see sites featured in the "Clear" episode.

“Grantville Dead Walking Tour just had its 2,000th guest,” said Sells this week. “Many more come through Grantville outside tour hours. The crowds have become so large we have added two tours, making a total of five each weekend. Sunday we had 75 guests from 11 different states, including Hawaii. One family of five was from Sao Paulo, Brazil.”

The tours have also brought a new business to the Grantville downtown. Zombie Geeks opened last week at 16 Main St., according to Sells.

With the growing number of tourists visiting, Sells plans to expand the tours by involving Grantville teenagers.

Tours are Fridays at 6:30, and Saturdays and Sundays at 3 and 6:30. The tours are free. One hour before they start, visitors can watch “Clear” at Station 22 Grill on Main Street.
