Clerk injured in shooting still critical

by Wes Mayer

Sanjay Patel remains in critical condition in the hospital a month after he was shot in an incident at a Newnan store.

On June 15, Patel was the victim of a shooting at the Little Rush convenience store at the corner of East Broad Street and Pinson Street. Around 8:45 p.m., an unknown armed suspect shot Patel in the head. Patel was then transported by helicopter to the Atlanta Medical Center.

According to Deputy Chief Rodney Riggs with the Newnan Police Department, Patel is still in critical condition. The bullet entered the top of Patel's head near one of his eyes, Riggs said, and he has been kept in a comatose state. In the last month, however, he has not been stable enough to handle operation.

At this moment, police are following leads but have not identified any suspects. Detective Chad Wood is investigating the case.
