Coweta County Sheriff Mike Yeager has been honored by the Coweta District of the Boy Scouts of America as the 2013 Golden Eagle Recipient.

The Boy Scouts annually select an honoree who displays the values and ideals that are associated with scouting.

Newnan City Councilman and 2012 Golden Eagle Honoree Bob Coggin served as host for the event on March 21. The purpose of the dinner was to raise support for the Boy Scouts of America. Coggin was particularly interested in sponsoring the 5th Annual Golden Eagle Dinner because this year’s event honored Yeager, whom he considers a dear friend.

“Sheriff Mike Yeager exhibits the most rare and precious traits embodied in the Boy Scout values: vision, determination, and faithfulness,” said Coggin. “Mike illustrates the American Dream.”

Yeager is a lifelong resident of Coweta County, living in the Moreland area. He is married to Beverly Yeager, principal of Moreland Elementary School, and they have two children — Kirby, a graduate of Auburn University, and Weston, an Eagle Scout who is currently attending Auburn University.

Yeager began his law enforcement career in 1980 as a patrolman with the Newnan Police Department, served with the Georgia Department of Corrections in the Coweta Judicial Circuit Probation Office, and served as the captain of the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations team.

Yeager was first elected Coweta County’s sheriff in 1993. He is currently serving his sixth term.

Yeager is active in the community, serving as past president of the Newnan Kiwanis Club, past director of the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce, and past chairman of the Hero’s Campaign for the local American Red Cross. He was a member and past chair of the local Newnan-Coweta Public Safety Board, and was a nominee for Coweta Citizen of the Year.

He has been involved in the Boy Scouts for many years while watching and assisting many young men, including his son Weston, attain the rank of Eagle Scout. He has been active in local sports programs for many years, from youth leagues to high schools, and is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

The Golden Eagle Dinner is the largest fundraiser to support the work of the Boy Scouts in Coweta County. More than 200 of Coweta County’s business, political, religious, and scout leaders attended the dinner to show their support of Sheriff Yeager and scouting.

In 2012, more than 200 Flint River Council scouts earned the highest rank possible in scouting, the rank of Eagle Scout, according to Mike Warren, Coweta district executive for the Boy Scouts. All of them completed an extensive community service project, varying from community gardens to hiking trails to building items needed at a church.

Scouts also recently collected 20,000 items of food for the Salvation Army and the other Coweta food banks, serving the hurting, the elderly and those who struggle financially in Coweta County.

Warren said, “We are honoring Sheriff Yeager because of his similar values with scouting and his work ethic.”

“Sheriff Yeager and Bob Coggin are united in generating support so the Boy Scouts can continue their local youth and programming activities like the Pinewood Derby, Scouting for Food and camping events,” Warren said.
