Newnan City Council is expected to approve adding one school resource officer to be stationed at city area elementary schools during its regular meeting Tuesday.
Also on the agenda are several appointments to various committees, as well as an amendment to the 2013 sanitation budget to cover costs for the city to resume bulk and yard trash pickup starting in March.
The Coweta County Board of Education wants to add three officers to work at the county school system’s elementary schools. Currently, the existing SRO officers are at the middle and high schools.
Funding for the additional officer will be split between the city and the school system.
Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. at city hall on LaGrange Street.
Also on the agenda is a request to transfer $196,016 from the general fund’s reserve fund to the sanitation fund to cover start-up costs associated with the city taking over bulk and yard waste pickup beginning March 4. The money taken from the reserve fund is from proceeds the city received when it sold sanitation equipment when garbage pickup was privatized in 2004.

This will be the second and final reading for both the SRO position and the sanitation transfer.

In other action, council will:

• Hear a request from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to hold a 5K walk Sept. 14, beginning and ending at Carl Miller Park.

• Hear a request from the Coweta County Drug Court to hold a 5K walk April 27 on its regular route.

• Hear a request from Jimmy Duncan to name the area at the intersection of Jackson Street, U.S. Highway 29 and Roscoe Road in memory of his family, who owned and operated Duncan’s Barbeque in that area for 44 years.

• Hear a request from Prevent Child Abuse Coweta to place pinwheels on the lawn of the Municipal Building and hold their Pinwheels for Prevention celebration during the month of April.

• Consider a request to authorize up to an additional $10,000 in matching funds relating to the Livable Centers Initiative grant award from the Atlanta Regional Commission.

• Consider changing the regular city council meeting on March 14 from 2:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. and follow that with the annual city council retreat.
