Timberli Cruz Williams, a Northgate High School senior, has been selected to share in a reading of the “ I Have A Dream” speech during the national televised 2013 Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Service in Atlanta on Monday.
The televised service will be at 8 a.m. at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Atlanta. It will be carried live on Atlanta’s Fox 5 television station.
Northgate’s Williams is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Timothy Williams. She will represent Coweta County and her mother’s native country of Honduras at the service, which will commemorate the 84th anniversary of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the 50th anniversary of the “I Have a Dream” speech.
“It is indeed an honor for the Coweta County School System to be represented this year,” said Northgate counselor Dawn Revere. “Timberli will be making history as the first student from Coweta County School System to participate as a speaker at this historical event.”
Each year, service organizers choose litany program readers from top students around the Atlanta metropolitan area who are from diverse ethnicities, cultures and religious practices. Students chosen for the honor meet criteria including an interview of oratorical skills and demonstration of the principles and qualities exemplified by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., including love for mankind, equality, concern for justice, unity, peace, service to others and goodwill for all mankind.
Williams has held numerous leadership positions in various clubs at Northgate High School including: National Honor Society, service project coordinator; Student Alliance for a Green Earth, public relations officer; Key Club, president; and member of Beta Club and Pet Rescue Club. She is a dedicated community volunteer whose service has included the Real Life Center, helping economically disadvantaged citizens; UNICEF, collecting food for needy families; and creating a Relay for Life team with Newnan High School students to raise money for cancer research.

Williams has also received the AP scholar award, and is interested in majoring in pre-medical or biology in college.

Revere said that ninth grade East Coweta High School student Jasmine Guy, daughter of Dr. Marc and Sharilynn Guy, attended last year’s MLK Jr. program, and had an opportunity to interact with Connie Smith, oratorical director. Guy “represented our school system well. Her attendance helped to pave the way for Coweta County schools to be considered for participation in this year’s program,” Revere said.

The theme of the Jan. 21 MLK birthday commemoration program is “Remember! Celebrate! Act! King’s Dream for Our World.” The featured speaker, Reverend Samuel Rodriquez, is president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference.
