Kiwanians get update on battlefield park

Carolyn Turner, president of the Brown's Mill Battlefield Association, gave the Newnan Kiwanis Club an update on the progress being made on the park. There will be a 2,000-foot walking trail and seven historical markers.

If you’re over 50, you may not know what a Quick Response Code (QRC) is, but there will be seven at the Brown’s Mill Battlefield south of Newnan when it’s all done.
Carolyn Turner, president of the Brown’s Mill Battlefield Association, addressed the Newnan Kiwanis Club at its weekly luncheon at the Newnan Country Club.
QRCs are the little squares with nonsense (somewhat like a bar code) that a Smart Phone can read. There will be seven signs in the battlefield park when it is completed and the QRCs will enable Smart Phone users to connect to the battleground’s website for more information. Those who don’t have an iPhone or smartphone can copy the website address and access it from any computer.
“Brown’s Mill Battle was on July 30, 1864, as part of the Atlanta campaign,” Turner said of the Civil War battle.
“It’s about three miles out of town. When you get to Haynes junkyard, you’re at the battlefield,” Turner said of the location of the battle.
In January there was a controlled burn which made a monument visible. Although it resembles a gravesite, it isn’t, Turner said. It was placed there in 1908 by the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

“The original roadbed will be fashioned into a walking trail that will run about 2,000 feet,” she told Kiwanians.

Over the years, artifacts have washed up, but with the junkyard so close, it’s hard to tell which are old and which are older.

“The junkyard has actually been good for the battleground,” Turner said.

“Who wants to live next to a junkyard?”

Consequently, surrounding property has not been developed.

The park consumes 150 acres and the main entrance is on Millard Farmer Road.
