Through PBS documentary, McAlpin learns of father’s role during WWII

Kathy McAlpin’s father died in a civilian plane crash nine years after World War II. McAlpin had always believed his wartime memories had died with him, and largely untold.
But during the past year, McAlpin — who works at Newnan’s Wesley Woods retirement complex — learned her father had not only served with distinction as a Marine Corps pilot during the war, he was a member of Marine Fighting Squadron 422, which suffered what has been described as “the largest military disaster in history without having a shot fired."
