U.S. 29, Roscoe, Sprayberry overhead utility lines moved

Relocation of Newnan Utilities’ overhead power lines at the intersection of U.S. 29, Roscoe Road and Sprayberry Road has been completed, according to Ed Strong, director of engineering for Newnan Utilities, hopefully allowing an intersection upgrade to proceed.
Strong made the report Friday to the Newnan Water, Sewerage & Light Commission, which governs the city utility.
In other meeting news:
• Strong also reported that MEAG Power, the public generation and transmission corporation that provides power to 49 Georgia communities, including Newnan, had notified Newnan Utilities it would have to commit to purchase $71,000 in reserves in the coming year. The annual reserve requirement is calculated at an estimated 15 percent over a utility’s expected power purchases for the coming year. The Newnan City Council will have to approve funding the reserve, which is within expectations.
• Work is progressing as scheduled on all other projects, Strong reported.
Despite an unusually dry fall, Newnan Utilities’ water reservoirs remain at 62 percent capacity heading into the rainy winter season, reported Newnan Utilities Director of Water Operations Brandon Lovett.
The 62 percent level is not low enough to institute the odd/even watering schedule.
Lovett also reported that last week’s rains had resulted in a 30 million gallon increase in reservoir storage and that if normal winter rains fall, the reservoirs can recover at a rate of 10 percent each week.
• Wastewater treatment plants are in compliance with all regulatory standards and defensive driving courses for employees are being completed as scheduled, Lovett said.
• Director of Administration Jeff Phillips reported that year-to-date, budgeted revenues were within 98 percent of projections and budgeted expenses at 96 percent. He also reported that 70 percent of budgeted capital projects had been completed and that 90 percent were expected to be completed by year’s end.
Work will begin soon on the 2013 budget, Phillips said.
• The water and light commission accepted Frost Cummings Tidwell Group as auditor for the 2012 fiscal year.
• Approved was a low bid from Headley Construction for renovations to the utility’s warehouse. The project includes an addition to the building for storage of inventory and machinery. The existing structure will receive a roof replacement, lighting upgrades and updates to employee work areas.
