Rain didn't keep the veterans away at Monday's veterans appreciation event at Golden Corral. The lines extended almost two thirds the way around the building

Hundreds of veterans enjoyed a free dinner Monday at Golden Corral as part of the restaurant’s annual Veterans Day celebration.
The annual event is coordinated by Hope and Scott Thomas.
Hope is a server at the restaurant, and Scott is in the Army. They began coordinating the event six years ago.
In addition to the free meal, the Northgate High School JROTC was on hand to provide a flag ceremony, as well as to carry trays and escort veterans to their tables. Several military vehicles were on display.
It was originally planned to have a drill team perform, but they were unable to because of the rain, said Scott Thomas. Some of the military vehicles that were originally scheduled to be there weren’t able to come because of the rain, either, according to Thomas.
Even with the rain, “it was a great turnout,” he said. “We still got equipment and vehicles from several combat eras,” he said.
“We had four deuce-and-a-halfs, several World War II Jeeps, some weaponry,” as well as Vietnam and modern-era equipment, Thomas said.

Representatives from the Disabled American Veterans Association took up a collection, and “they said they did very well,” Thomas said.

A Boy Scout troup also participated.
