Alison Wallace feels a little like Old Mother Hubbard.
The cupboard at Bridging the Gap is not empty, but nearly so. During food distribution on Tuesday, boxes were less full than usual, and Wallace, executive director of the non-profit, appealed to the community to help with donations of canned food.
Three cans of tomato sauce remained on one shelf. “Spaghetti sauce – desperately” is among the top items on the needed list, Wallace said. Jelly and soup are also greatly needed.
Wallace said Bridging the Gap will be set up to receive food donations on Thursday, Fridays and Saturdays for the next several weeks from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. She said she hopes the community will respond, as the needs for food are great.
Her observation Tuesday – at the BTG warehouse on Andrews Street just north of the downtown Newnan business district – was that the food program’s parking lot was full, but the shelves were empty.
Monetary contributions can also help alleviate the shortage of food. Donations can be sent to Bridging the Gap, P.O. Box 223, Newnan, Ga., 30264. Contributions can be made online at btgcommunity.org .

Bridging the Gap began as a ministry aiming to get food from grocery stores that would be tossed – putting that food into the homes of people who need it. BTG regularly distributes food directly and distributes food through churches and local ministries.

BTG also mounted a program to feed children during the summer break from school and is involved in other ministries that meet basic needs all year.
