Master Gardeners' fall plant sale Saturday

The first few minutes of the Coweta County Master Gardener Extension Volunteers' spring 2011 plant sale were a rush of excitement, and here only a few tomatoes remain. They are holding their fall plant sale at the fairgrounds greenhouse on Pine Road Saturday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., with a variety of landscape plants priced to sell, with many just $1 and $2.

Most people think of the spring as planting season, but fall is actually the ideal planting season for many perennials, such as trees and shrubs.
Cowetans can take advantage of the planting weather by visiting the Coweta Master Gardener Fall Plant Sale.
The sale will be held at the Master Gardener Extension Volunteers greenhouse, located on the Coweta County Fairgrounds property on Pine Road south of Newnan. The greenhouse is located just past the horse arena.
The sale begins at 9 a.m. and runs until 1 p.m. or until all the plants are sold, whichever comes first.
“We’ve got slightly under 500 plants,” said Dave Langhoff, greenhouse committee chairman. Many are plants that were originally propagated for the annual spring plant sale. “Of course they have gotten bigger,” Langhoff said. “Some of them that we started this February from little twigs are now 3 foot tall plants,” he said.
There are a wide variety of plants, including gardenias, Pgee and Tardiva hydrangeas, clematis, “a bunch of daylilies,” canna lilies, lambs ear, abelia, angel trumpet, bridal wreath spirea, and even a few fig trees and blackberry bushes. There are also a few hardy geraniums that are perennials, Langhoff said.

The fall plant sale is much smaller and decidedly different than the spring event, which draws huge crowds and can turn into a frenzy.

“The fall sale is just more relaxed,” Langhoff said. “People just dribble in a little at a time.”

The fall sale isn’t necessarily held every year. It wasn’t last year. “In 2011, we sold completely out at the spring sale so we didn’t have much to go in with,” Langhoff said. This year, they collected and propagated around 6,000 plants, and “we had a lot left over. So the fall sale depends on what we have,” he said.

All proceeds benefit the Master Gardener programs and Coweta County 4-H.

Plants are priced to sell, with many only $1 or $2. Some larger plants are $4 or $5, Langhoff said.
