To no one's surprise, a portion of the Hwy. 34 bypass did not open on Wednesday, as the Georgia Department of Transportation officials had said it would.
However, some lanes were opened by Thursday afternoon.
GDOT officials had said late last week that the portion of the bypass from the CSX bridge to Bullsboro Drive would open on Wednesday.
As of 7 p.m. Wednesday, the lanes hadn't opened.
The new traffic signal at Postal Parkway was originally set to go into operation on Tuesday, Sept. 18. But Wednesday evening, the message sign said Sept. 19. The light was operating Wednesday evening.
On Thursday afternoon, the westbound lanes were open from Bullsboro to the bridge.
Eastbound lanes were opened from just east of Jefferson Parkway to Bullsboro Drive.

Crews were out in various places Thursday, with a good bit of excavation work being done along the bypass just west of the intersection with U.S. 29, near the old Coweta Fayette EMC building, and workers were taking measurements at the intersection with Hospital Road.

The entire project was supposed to be completed on Jan. 27, 2012. GDOT officials say the project should be done by early fall.

The contractor, Sunbelt Structures, is being assessed a fine of $1,000 per day for not completing the work on time.
