Coweta County’s biggest weekend of the year is about to begin.
Several events take place Labor Day weekend in Newnan and Coweta but the biggest is the annual Powers Festival, a juried arts and crafts show held near the Coweta/ Heard County line.
Some changes are in store this year for visitors to the 42-year-old Powers Festival, now managed by a company contracted with Coweta Festivals, Inc. – the group of five non-profit organizations which owns the festival property, now known as “Powers Pavilion.”
New attractions include small carnival rides for children; “extreme” recreation activities for older youth; new artists and crafters; reconfiguration of some areas; a new fourth stage for musical acts in the Three Day Concert for Charity; tents near the main stage so visitors may enjoy food during the entertainment; and a ticket that allows festival access all three days for $10.
The festival runs from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday. One-day admission is $7. Seniors 55 and over, students (with ID) and active-duty military (with ID) are admitted for $5, and children under 12 get in free. Parking is free.
All proceeds benefit the five non-profits of Coweta Festivals, Inc. Newnan-Coweta Jaycees, Pilot Club of Newnan, 4-H Clubs of Coweta County, Newnan-Coweta Art Association and Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce.
Coweta Festivals, Inc. and event management company Xcessive Sound Inc. have made it part of their charter to give back to charities and the community as much as possible, said Xcessive’s Mark Turnham said.
Festival-goers also will find plenty of familiar faces, especially at the food booths where a number of Coweta County clubs and churches are manning their usual posts, counting on Powers Festival as a big part of their fund-raising efforts.
