Traffic confusion: Yes, it's legal to turn on red at Jefferson/Clark streets
By JOHN A. WINTERS
It’s legal to turn on red lights at the Jefferson and Clark streets intersection north of downtown Newnan, but you still need to obey local traffic laws.
There’s been some confusion because traffic signs at the intersection notifying drivers about the legality of turning on red have disappeared.
Right turns on red are allowed after a full stop for those coming west on Jefferson Street toward downtown Newnan and making a right turn onto Clark Street, says Newnan Police Chief Buster Meadows. The same holds true for those heading north on Jefferson from downtown and wanting to turn left onto Clark Street.
“They can turn on red after coming to a complete stop,” Meadows said. “They must yield to the traffic with the green light when making a right or left on red.”
It’s also important to note that each car must stop — just because the car in front of you turned on red, you still have to come to a complete stop at the light before proceeding.
