You might call it poetic justice when a burglar accidentally shoots himself during the commission of a crime.
Such was the case Monday around 10:30 a.m. when two men attempted to steal a motorcycle from a Lake Circle residence.
The two got the motorcycle to the nearby woodline, but a 9mm pistol — in the back pocket of one suspect — went off, according to Major Jimmy Yarbrough with the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office. The bullet went through the man’s leg.
A person at the Lake Circle residence called authorities to report the missing motorcycle and that a shot was fired, the major said, adding the motorcycle was found at the woodbine.
Around 5 p.m. Monday, Coweta 911 received a call that a man at 12 Arnco 4th Street was shot and was lying in the bed. According to 911 traffic, the caller said the man who was shot did not own a gun.
Investigators went out and found Jeffery Arthur, 28, with a bullet wound in his leg, Yarbrough said. “We started putting things together and figured out what happened.”
Arthur was arrested and charged with burglary, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, the major said. The accomplice, Justin Willingham, 28, was charged with burglary and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Both were in the Coweta County Jail on Tuesday.
