Six people, including two Cowetans, have been elected as delegates to the Democratic National Convention.
The six – three men and three women – were elected at a meeting at Maguire’s Irish Pub in Senoia on April 21. Party member George Johnson said more than 200 people were present for the meeting.
Twenty-seven candidates vied for six openings. Each candidate was allowed two minutes to speak before the vote was taken. “Speeches were dynamic and the crowd was energized to bring the strengths of Barack O’Bama’s message to Georgia despite the odds,” Johnson said.
Elected as delegates were:
• Morris Steward, acting chair, Coweta County Democratic Committee; State Committee Member, LGBT caucus member; Georgia Democratic Party “Yellow Dog Club”.
• Kevin Madden, vice chair, Third Congressional District; Fayette County Democratic Committee; and treasurer of the Georgia Democratic Committee.
• Arnold Martin, chair, Fayette County Democratic Committee; State Committee Member, Community Leader and Democratic Supporter; 2011 People to People IOLC Award winner.
• Delia Tedder Crouch, vice chair, Coweta County Democratic Committee; State Committee Member.
• Markgetta Langford, executive vice chair, Fayette County Democratic Committee; president, Fayette Democratic Women; Affirmative Action chair, Third Congressional District.
• Marion Ray, treasurer, Henry County Democratic Party; State Committee Member; member “Yellow Dog Club”; lobbyist at the Georgia General Assembly.
There are 15 counties in the Third Congressional District. Two of the six delegates from this district, Dee Crouch and Morris Steward, are residents of Coweta County.
“At the convention, these delegates will work on strategies to advocate for the democratic message of mutual commitment and compassion,” Johnson said.
