Today is the National Day of Service that combines a focus on the presidential inauguration and the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Chelsea Clinton, daughter of former Pres. Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, will serve as honorary chair of the 2013 National Day of Service. The service day kicks off the second inaugural weekend of Pres. Barack Obama and Vice Pres. Joe Biden.
Chelsea Clinton will join Americans in all 50 states to participate in service events today and will headline the Service Summit on the National Mall. The Obama and Biden families will also be participating in service events in the D.C. area on Saturday.
Cowetans can access information about projects affiliated with the National Day of Service online at: www.2013pic.org/service/serve . Among the nearby events listed are – Ample Harvest, Peachtree City and Temple, two shifts starting at 8 a.m. and noon; Reece Center for Handicapped Horsemanship, Palmetto, 9 a.m.; Nalley seedlings planting in Kirkwood neighborhood, Atlanta, 9 a.m.; and Spa Day at Christian City, Union City, 10 a.m.
“There is no more fitting way to mark a presidential inauguration than a day of service,” Chelsea Clinton said. “Coming together as a country to strengthen our communities has always been part of the American spirit. I am deeply grateful that Pres. Obama and his administration have put service at the center of the Inauguration weekend and I am proud to be part of a nation-wide service effort, honoring the service and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and building a brighter future for all of us.”

Clinton has worked at McKinsey & Company and Avenue Capital and studied at Stanford, Oxford and Columbia Universities. She is currently pursuing a doctorate at Oxford, working at New York University and working with the Clinton Foundation and the Clinton Global Initiative.

“Through her work with the Clinton Foundation and her recent efforts to help communities impacted by Hurricane Sandy, Chelsea sets a remarkable example for serving and strengthening our country,” said Steve Kerrigan, PIC president and CEO.
