2012 Camaro wrecks in high speed chase

by JOHN A. WINTERS

A high-speed chase through south Coweta County with speeds in excess of 100 mph ended when the suspect's vehicle ran over stop sticks and eventually spun out.

Joseph Earl Cates, 40, not only was hit with several traffic violations, but narcotics charges as well, according to Coweta County Jail records.

The chase started around 8 p.m. Friday on Glazier Road when Cates was caught driving 67 mph in a 45 mph zone, said Lieutenant Colonel Jimmy Yarbrough with the Coweta County Sheriff's Office.

Coweta Deputy Taylor Helton turned around to stop Cates' vehicle, but Cates took off, the colonel said.

"He went through stop signs at Al Roberts Road and then got on Rocky Mount Road, which is partly gravel, and was going 80 mph," Yarbrough said. "He then went down Strickland Town Road and Luthersville Road continuing to drive in excess of 100 mph."

Cates, driving a 2012 black Camero, then got on Georgia Highway 54 where stop sticks were placed at Bexton Road, the colonel said. Cates continued driving in excess of 80 mph and more spikes were placed at Shake Hunter Road. By that time, Cates was driving on rims and Helton performed a PIT maneuver and stopped Cates. The chase lasted 25 to 30 minutes.

Cates was charged with three counts of narcotics possession, including methamphetamine and oxycodone, jail records show. He also was charged with fleeting/ attempting to elude, driving without a licensen and speeding.
