Schools invest in fueling station

By Jeff Bishop

The Times-Herald

The Coweta County Board of Education agreed Tuesday night to partner with the Coweta County Water and Sewerage Authority on a new East Pine Road fueling station that should save the school system tens of thousands of dollars, according to Superintendent Blake Bass.

"We have been working with the Coweta County government and the Coweta Water and Sewerage Authority on a site location that the authority has for a fueling station," Bass told the school board, which met at its Jackson Street office.

"We've been looking for other fueling stations for a couple of years now," said Bass.

The "details still have to be worked out," Bass said, but it appears the county school system's buy-in will be $85,000.

It's well worth the investment, Bass said.

"In a year or so we'll make up that cost in the savings we make on fuel costs, easy," he assured the board, because the buses won't have to be routed to locations in other parts of the county for fueling.

The board unanimously approved the proposal.

In other business, the board:

* Approved a close-out resolution for Brooks Elementary School.

* Approved a Title 50 resolution for K-8 class size waivers.

* Appointed Sue Brown as the Georgia School Board Association legislative liaison.

* Recognized Atkinson Elementary school for the receipt of a recent grant award.

* Recognized the Coweta County Sheriff's Office for the Project SAFE program.

* Approved a request from Newnan High School to allow the Air Force JROTC program participants to attend the 2009 American Legion Southeastern Regional JROTC Indoor Drill Championships in Montgomery, AL.
