Greater Greener rally set for Wednesday

Students at the Coweta County Performance Learning Center expect the second annual Greener Greater Newnan rally to be even greater than the last.

Students are now talking to more than 30 potential sponsors. Many local businesses will showcase their green products -- including some presenting newer hybrid automobiles.

The purpose of this student-led public awareness campaign is to educate the community about ecological responsibility. The students have done extensive research and met with community leaders to educate themselves about ways to reduce their carbon footprint so that they can pass the knowledge along to residents of Newnan.

They also gain skills that will be transferable to the workplace.

"Greener Greater Newnan is turning out to be an expo for companies to display green initiatives. We know that the U.S. is in a race with other countries to deploy and use green technologies. We want to positively impact our local economy by showcasing ways we can use these technologies in Newnan and Coweta County," said Mark Whitlock, CEO of the Central Educational Center.

Whitlock said Greater Greener Newnan "is a project that has great potential to grow." Students hope that they can affect the environment in a positive way while having fun.

This year's rally will be Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. at the Greenville Street Park.

There will also be multiple bands at the rally. Youth groups from around the area will be participating. More energy efficient products will be presented along with food for purchase and games for the children.

Performance Learning Center is a program sponsored by Communities in Schools, initially funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Students at PLC are taking advantage of the unique opportunity to earn back lost credits at a faster rate than normally afforded in regular school setting.
