'Footloose' presented at Newnan High School

The 2013 spring musical at Newnan High School was “Footloose” – inspired by the 1984 movie.

The NHS fine arts department put together the production, which was staged at the school’s auditorium from April 27-30.

Inspired by the iconic Kevin Bacon film, the Broadway musical production thrilled audiences for nearly two years. It features all of the chart-topping music from the film – “Almost Paradise,” “Holding Out For A Hero,” “Let’s Hear It For The Boy,” and the title song, “Footloose,” – mixed with new material written specifically for the stage.

“Footloose” is the story of a carefree city kid who moves to a conservative rural town where dancing is outlawed. He takes on the local authorities, makes all the right moves, and wins the girl. Ren McCormack, the city kid, was played by A.J. Young. He and his mother, Ethel, played by Maycee Dukes, move from Chicago to Bomont, Texas.

Shaw Moore, the local preacher and opponent of dancing, was played by Railey Owen. Katie Queener played the pastor’s wife, and their rebellious daughter, Ariel, was portrayed by Emily Peek.

The stage adaptation of “Footloose” was written by Dean Pitchford and Walter Bobbie, based on the original screenplay by Pitchford. Music and lyrics are by Tom Snow and Pitchford with additional music by rock legends Eric Carmen, Sammy Hagar, Kenny Loggins and Jim Steinman.

The NHS production was directed by drama teacher Bob Ramseur. Music direction was by Elizabeth Robbins, Newnan’s choral music director, and John Erdogan, director of bands, conducted the orchestra.

More than 55 students performers and technicians were involved in the production.
