Teacher in Focus: Lauren Scheu

Lauren Scheu teaches third grade at Arbor Springs Elementary School. She has been teaching for 17 years.

Why did you become a teacher? 

I started out in pre-law at Florida State University. I had to do community service to keep my scholarship. I tutored as part of my service and really enjoyed seeing the progress the kids could make. I changed my major and stuck with it.

What is your favorite part? 

Just seeing the light bulb go off, their growth, and what they’re able to accomplish by the end of the year.

If you were not a teacher, what would you be doing? 

I think I would be tied to education somehow. Maybe teach teachers or be a professor.

What do you do for fun? 

I spend a lot of time with my family. We travel a lot, and I have family from Florida to New York. I love reading, and I like doing a lot of things around Atlanta.

What is your favorite movie(s)? 

Titanic, James Bond movies. I’m sports fanatic, so I probably watch sports more than movies.

What is your favorite book(s)? 

Jodi Piccolt, Nicholas Sparks, Savannah Blues by Mary Kay Andrews

What is the one thing you want your students to learn? 

We have a give and take relationship. We’re a family here. Even if they do not learn everything, but still accomplish something, it’s rewarding to me. I want them to know success even if it’s small. Hopefully, they will want more and know that someone cares about them and knows what they can do.
