Jonathan Stancil and Newnan Mayor Keith Brady work at the Minecraft Station and created a self-generated 3-D world through the program.

The Carnegie Foundation recently sponsored the Minecraft STEM event at the Newnan Carnegie library as a celebration for the kids who participated in the “Mayor’s Summer Reading Program of Awesomeness.”

Kids who registered for the summer reading program and then read at least 350 minutes throughout June and July were able to come to the event. For the celebration, kids were able to experience several different science activities. They also took turns playing Minecraft with Newnan Mayor Keith Brady.

Minecraft is a video game, which allows players to build structures and other items out of textured cubes in a self-generating 3D world.

The different science activities and stations were led by community professionals and educators.

The nine stations included:

• Minecraft station with Mayor Brady

• Architecture station with Kip Oldham, KAO Designs

• “Liquid armor” station with Cami Sullivan, reach specialist at Atkinson Elementary School

• Lego architecture team build with JC Barb, community relations manager at Barnes & Noble

• Animal Husbandry with LaNessia Miller, Teacher at Atkinson Elementary.

• Agricultural station with Jan Bowyer, master gardener

• Robotics/engineering station with Craig Exner, teacher at Moreland Elementary School

• Minecraft “Foodstuffs” with Carnegie Foundation members Gail Zoeller, Katie Brady, and Connie Posey.

• Creative problem solving station with Donald White, science director for the Coweta County School System.
