Heather Reaves, fifth grade, Jefferson Parkway Elementary

Heather Reaves teaches fifth grade at Jefferson Parkway Elementary School. She has been teaching for 13 years.

Why did you become a teacher?

I was actually a business major for the first three years of college. I coordinated the summer reading program at the public library the summer before my last year. I realized that is what I wanted to do, so I changed my major to elementary education.

What is your favorite part?

Getting to know the kids and building relationships with them and their parents.

If you were not a teacher, what would you be doing?

Business

What do you do for fun?

Anything outdoors - hiking, traveling, charity runs.

What is your favorite movie(s)?

Historical fiction - Pearl Harbor, Titanic

What is the one thing you want your students to learn?

We focus on a lot of team building - working together and accepting who you are. I also spend time teaching them strategies to learn anything independently.
