Amy Vickery, kindergarten, Canongate Elementary School

Amy Vickery teaches Kindergarten at Canongate Elementary School. She has been at Canongate since 2000, and this year is her 18th in teaching.

Why did you become a teacher?

My mother was a teacher and that inspired me. I always enjoyed being around children, how they learn and discover new things. That enjoyment and love made me want to do teaching as a career. Both my parents are retired teachers from Coweta.

What is your favorite part of being a teacher?

Watching children make discoveries on their own. The “Aha” moment the light bulb goes on. The challenge of different strategies to help children grasp new concepts.

If you were not a teacher, what would you be doing?

I would be involved in children’s theater. I have done it in the past with church.

What is your favorite movie?

Remember the Titans

What is your favorite book?

The Bible

Historical fiction

Do you have a family?

I’ve been married since 1999, and we have 4 dogs.

What do you do when you’re not teaching?

Spend time with family. My parents and brother live close by. I play the keyboard for the worship team at Sunrise Church in Newnan. I also enjoy kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, reading, and crafts.

What are your goals for your students throughout the school year?

My goals for them are to:

• love coming to school

• have an excitement for learning

• do their best each day

• to be kind
