Top 10 Educational Issues

State legislators weigh in for 2014

by Celia Shortt

In its annual media symposium at the beginning of the month, the Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education unveiled its top ten ten educational issues to watch in 2014.

“Our critical list of issues is designed really to provide a research based non-partisan analysis of issues that we think are going to be affecting our schools and our children over the next coming year,” said Dr. Dana Rickman, Policy and Research Director for Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education.

According to Rickman, the top ten educational issues for this next year include: •College and career ready standards - a must •The next generation of student assessments - a road map •Teacher preparation programs - a new beginning •Accountability - measuring teacher and leader effectiveness •School climate - it matters, a lot •Early learning - closing the achievement gap •Work ready students - the goal •Barriers to higher education completion - clearing the hurdles •Governance strategies - keys to success •Puzzle pieces - putting it all together

The partnership also released a report, “Top Ten Issues to Watch in 2014,” which explains each issue in depth.

“Georgia has implemented many reforms over the past several years, and we now have many critical puzzle pieces in place that will help us move forward,” said Rickman. “This year’s report looks at the entire education pipeline from early learning to post-secondary graduates.”

The report begins with “Ten Indicators for Success: Where is Georgia Today.” Georgia Partnership President Dr. Steve Dolinger explains this introduction lets readers clearly see where Georgia stacks up against other states in a variety of key categories.

“The annual Top Ten is used across the state as a critical resource document. It is written so the layman can understand the complexities of the education landscape. We invite all education stakeholders to review it and use it throughout the year.”
