HIV/AIDS Awareness

Author, alumna to speak at UWG Nov. 19

CARROLLTON, GA – The University of West Georgia will host an HIV/AIDS talk on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 6:30 p.m. at UWG’s Ingram Library in the Murphy Reading Room.

The talk will feature UWG alumna and author Lee Kearney as the keynote speaker. This event is free and open to the public.

Kearney will speak about her book, “He Always Brought Me Flowers: A Mother’s Remembrance of Her Son’s Journey,” which tells the story of her son’s journey with addiction, HIV/AIDS and her grief and loss.

“It is said in the counseling world that the hardest death to endure is the loss of a child. They are supposed to follow behind us, not go before us. The loss of my son at age 26 rocked my world. His addiction threatened to take him from me, but I finally lost him to HIV/AIDS,” Kearney shares in the epilogue of her book.

Kearney will be available to autograph copies of her book following the program. An exhibit related to the talk will also be up in the same space until Dec. 1 in recognition of World AIDS Day. World AIDS is held on Dec. 1 each year and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died.

The inaugural World AIDS Day, held in 1988, was the first global health day. Free and confidential HIV Testing will also be available on Tuesday, Nov. 19, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Ingram Library. This event is being co-sponsored by UWG’s College of Social Sciences, Alumni Association and the Responsible Sexuality Committee.
