Teacher In Focus: Ellen Thomas

Ellen Thomas

Ellen Thomas is a fourth grade teacher at Glanton Elementary School in Grantville, Georgia.

Why did you become a teacher?

I’m a teacher because I love the light bulb, ah-ha moment when students understand something. Public education is a foundation of our democracy. It’s how we pass along information about being a global citizen.

What is your favorite part of teaching?

We’re not just teaching content, we’re teaching the students. You have to invest time in the students and teach them content. I believe social skills are embedded in academics, teaching them to solve their own problems in a pro-social way.

What do you do for fun?

I spend a lot of my time with teaching, planning, and personal development. I’m a perpetual student. I read and spend time with my family. My children also teach me more about technology.

What is your favorite movie?

Anything science fiction

What is the most important thing you want students to learn?

That the life and learning skills you can gain at school will directly affect your life.
