Eight Coweta County School System high school students have been chosen to participate in the prestigious Georgia Governor’s Honors Program this summer at Valdosta State University.

The students are:

• Mitchell Busby of Central Educational Center, Technology

• Josue Araya of East Coweta High School, Visual Arts

• Dakota Becker of East Coweta High School, Visual Arts

• Harrison Brown of Newnan High School, Music/Brass – Tuba

• Jeremy Messer of Newnan High School, Social Studies

• Sarah Robinson of Newnan High School, Music/Woodwinds – Bassoon

• Audrey Goodman of Northgate High School, Communicative Arts

• Amelia Merriman of Northgate High, Music/Woodwinds – Oboe

Governor’s Honors is a residential program designed to provide intellectually gifted and artistically talented high school students challenging and enriching educational opportunities not usually available during the regular school year.

Nearly 3,000 students from across the state were interviewed and auditioned over three weekends in January and February, and from those nominees 690 finalists were chosen to participate in the 2013 program.

The program is fully funded by the Georgia General Assembly, so there is no charge for students to attend.

Coweta high schools nominated 47 students, who were honored by their high school principals and community dignitaries at a breakfast held at the Central Educational Center earlier this year.

GHP Director Dale Lyles said that “GHP is such a competitive program that even being nominated is an accomplishment,” said GHP Director Dale Lyles. “I congratulate the students of the Coweta County School System, and look forward to meeting them and their parents in June.”
