Social Studies teacher Levi Young looks on as guest speaker Rashard Stegall announces a new scholarship available to minority male graduates of East Coweta, Newnan and Northgate high schools.

A student committee chaired by East Coweta High School senior Montice Monroe and facilitated by social studies teacher Levi Young organized the school's fourth annual Black History Month Celebration recently.

“I am very proud of our student committee and Mr. Young for their hard work on our Black History Month Program," East Coweta Principal Evan Horton said. "As always, this year's event was second to none.”

Monroe also served as master of ceremonies for the event, held after school and attended by students, administrators, faculty and parents. It featured a variety of performances and speeches resulting in a cohesive celebration by diverse participants, according to school officials. Keynote speakers were Kelly F. Stephens, a U.S. history teacher, and 2012 graduate Rashard Stegall, now a student at Morehouse College.

Stegall ended his speech with the special announcement about a new scholarship available to minority male graduates of East Coweta, Newnan and Northgate high schools. The W.J. Johnson Memorial Book Scholarship and Persevering Scholar Award is funded through the efforts of recent graduates of all three Coweta high schools.

Other performers included Ronald Wayne Charactor, Devaneer Burden, Allison Dees, Sasha Smith, Kenneth Brooks, the ECHS Saxophone Quintet, Aric Sheppard, Summer Underwood, Diamond Pettaway, the YKPhi Step Team and Candice Bass.
