As first-graders at Newnan Crossing Elementary School were busy studying the phonics skill qu, Michelle Soutter – parent of first-grader AJ Soutter – was contacting college roommate to arrange a surprise visit from an author.
Author of The Wedding of Q and U, Maureen Keegan lives in Morris, Illinois (near Chicago) with her family. She wrote the book in 2005 and has spoken at many schools in the Midwest regarding writing and collecting the tools to be a good writer.
Keegan shared examples of her first-grade writing, then showed students how her writing progressed as she grew older.
Keegan shared a song from Taylor Swift and showed how she is a writer, not just a famous singer.
“We discuss authors and illustrators with every story that we read,” said NCES first grade teacher Amy Cooper. “The students were so excited to get to meet a real author and were curious as to whether she might be writing new books. She read four manuscripts that she was in the process of sending to publishers and one of those manuscripts was What I Love About My Teacher. She encouraged the students to make a class book of what they love about their teacher.”
Keegan donated a copy of The Wedding of Q and U to the NCES Media Center.
