Hispanic Heritage Month was observed with a lively musical celebration at Jefferson Parkway Elementary School recently.
Two programs were held – one for younger students and another for the older pupils at the school. Tahino – a band comprised of Otto Rondon, Hector Perdomo and Gustavo Arenas – shared many facets of Latin American culture with the students through music.
Dr. Sean Dye, principal at the school, welcomed parents and other guest to “our annual celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.”
Rondon, who hails from Venezuela, told the students the program would offer “examples of our music from South America.” Playing instruments during the program were Perdomo, who is from Honduras, and Arenas, who is from Colombia – as well as a band Rondon assembled of Jefferson Parkway students.
A group of teachers took part in a dance demonstration led by Rondon.

Rondon used a map to show the wide reach of Latino culture in the Americas. He also demonstrated and let students handle numerous musical instruments from various countries in South America and Central America.

A display of Huichol Art was on display in the gymnasium during the programs. Students had used craft sticks to make designs in the style used by the Huichol people, Native Americans who live in west central Mexico.
