Education Notes: Orientation for CLICK volunteer tutors is Oct. 3

Certified Literate is Coweta’s Key (CLICK), whose mission is “to enable all individuals to improve their quality of life through literacy,” is seeking volunteers who are interested in working with adults to improve their reading, writing and basic math skills.
Prospective volunteers are invited to attend orientation Thursday, Oct. 4 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the A. Mitchell Powell Library, 25 Hospital Road in Newnan. Orientation will give an overview of CLICK and adult education as well as information about working with adult learners.
A full day of volunteer tutor training with Literacy Volunteers of Atlanta will be offered on Saturday, Oct. 20 at the Powell Library. Volunteer tutors must be at least 18 years old, commit to a year of volunteering at least two hours per week and have transportation. No teaching background is necessary.

Price presents summer research honors project
Hampden-Sydney College junior Donophan Charles “Trey” Price III recently outlined his summer research honors project in a public presentation at the College.

Price is one of a select group of students who undertake summer research in conjunction with members of the Hampden-Sydney faculty. Each project is evaluated on its originality, on the thoroughness of its research methods, and on the quality of its findings.

Price’s project was entitled, “The Voiceless.” A government major at the private men’s college, Price is a graduate of Northgate High School the son of Mr. and Mrs. Donophan C. Price II of Newnan.

College prep seminar in Grantville Oct. 11

A college prep seminar will be held in Grantville on Thursday, Oct. 11 from 7-8 p.m. at the Clements-Malcolm Community Center, 329 Griffin Street.

The public is invited to attend the event, at which representatives from the University of West Georgia, West Georgia Technical College and Brewton-Parker College’s Newnan campus will provide information.

Murphy honor graduate of Ashworth program

Dillon Shane Murphy, son of Jennie Phillips of LaGrange, graduated with honors from Ashworth High School recently.

Educated in Meriwether County schools from pre-K through ninth grade, Murphy finished high school in the home school program of Ashworth under the instruction of his grandfather, John Murphy. A graduation celebration was held at the home of his grandparents, John and Karey Murphy, in Luthersville.

Murphy currently is a student at West Georgia Technical College in LaGrange. He is the great-grandson of Calvin and Imogene Murphy of Luthersville and the late H.C... and Eva Kee of Newnan.

CEC to hold College Probe Fair and Open House Oct. 1

Central Educational Center will host more than 50 colleges, schools and universities during its College Probe Fair and Open House Oct. 1.

All high school juniors and seniors are urged to attend the event, where exhibiting educational institutions will offer information about their programs and courses of study.

Computer classes offered at UWG’s Newnan Center

The University of West Georgia’s Continuing Education Department is offering computer classes at the Newnan Center campus on Solar Circle in Newnan. Offerings include:

• Excel 2010 Intermediate Course – Friday, Oct. 19 from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. This course is being offered at the intermediate level for attendees with some knowledge of Excel 2010. The goal is for the student to become proficient in such tasks as consolidating data, using advanced chart formatting options, sorting and filtering data, using special formatting options, using templates, using error tracing features, protecting worksheets, and linking worksheets and workbooks.

• PowerPoint 2010 Basic Course – Friday, Nov. 16 from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. This course is being offered at the basic level for attendees with limited knowledge of PowerPoint 2010. The goal is for the student to become proficient in getting started with PowerPoint, creating a basic presentation, formatting text on slides, adding graphic objects to a presentation, working with tables, importing charts, WordArt, and preparing to deliver a presentation.

• Access 2010 Basic Course – Friday, Dec. 14 from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. This course is being offered at the basic level for attendees with limited knowledge of Access 2010. General topics to be discussed are organizing data efficiently, starting Access, opening Access databases, creating a database, creating tables and working in tables, modifying a table’s design, fields and records, data entry rules, simple queries, using forms and working with reports.

Youth Leadership Coweta open to high school juniors

Registration is open for Youth Leadership Coweta, a program designed for high school juniors aimed to develop leadership potential and acquaint participants with community needs, problems and resources through interaction with local leaders and decision-makers.

A partnership between Summit Family YMCA and District 4 Health Services, the program is free to participants but requires a seven-month commitment of approximately 2.5 days per month and participation in a service-based learning project.

Free GED classes offered in Grantville and Senoia

Free GED classes currently are being offered in Grantville and Senoia.

Classes meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Grantville’s Clements-Malcolm Community Center, where volunteer teachers work with students from 7-9 p.m. For information on attending, volunteering or donating materials and supplies, contact Shelly Smith at 678-793-7574 or shellytsmith1954@yahoo.com .

Orientations for Senoia classes are scheduled for Oct. 15 and Oct. 17 from 5-8 p.m. at the HFL Resource Center, 7285 Hwy. 16. Prospective students must call ahead to reserve a space and are required to attend all six hours of their assigned orientation sessions.

October’s orientations are the last of 2012. Orientations will begin again in January. Call 770-599-1746 to make a reservation.

Internship

Ann Skrmetti of Coweta County, a rising Senior and a Fibers major at Savannah College of Art and Design, currently is serving as a design intern at the Paper Source corporate headquarters in Chicago, Illinois.
