Education Notes: Orientations in August, September for free GED class in Senoia

Orientations for free GED classes to be held in Senoia at the HFL Resource Center, 7285 Hwy. 16, have been scheduled for August and September.
Prospective students must call ahead to reserve a space and are required to attend all six hours of their assigned orientation session. Upcoming orientations are Aug. 13 and Aug. 15 from 5-8 p.m. and Sept. 10 and Sept. 12 from 5-8 p.m. Call 770-599-1746 to make a reservation.

Harkleroad finishes 11th grade, heads for college
At a time when most high school students are still enjoying the summer, Amelia Harkleroad is preparing to leave for college.
After completing 11th grade at Northgate High School, the Newnan resident earned a place in the Bard College at Simon’s Rock fall 2012 entering class.
Harkleroad will join peers at Simon’s Rock in Great Barrington, Massachusetts on Aug. 18 to begin her college career early. The campus is home to more than 400 bright and highly motivated students engaged in a rigorous college education. Early college students are on track to graduate from college one or two years ahead of their peers.
“Simon’s Rock receives a number of impressive applications every year,” Steven Coleman, director of Admission said. “In a highly selective process, Harkleroad ‘s achievements stood out.”

Gordy, Morris awarded ABAC scholarships

Allison Gordy of Sharpsburg and Allison Morris of Newnan have been awarded scholarships from the ABAC Foundation to attend Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College during the 2012-13 academic year.

Gordy, a forestry major, received the J.E. (Pat) and Annie Lou Connor Forestry scholarship and Morris, a family and consumer sciences major, was awarded the Nancy Clark Coleman scholarship.

Gordy is a graduate of East Coweta High School, and Morris attended Northgate High School.

CEC plans HOPE workshop, Probe Fair this fall

Coweta County’s Central Educational Center will hold a HOPE Scholarship workshop Sept. 6 at 6 p.m., the first in a series of fall exploratory events for students.

CEC’s annual Open House and College Probe Fair is set for Oct. 1 from 6-8 p.m. The annual Probe Fair is open to all Coweta County high school students, and usually includes representatives from more than 50 universities, colleges and technical schools. Representatives provide interested students with admissions materials and discuss the various offerings at their respective schools.

CEC’s Career Day will take place in two sessions Nov. 28, from 8-10 a.m. and from 12:45-2:15 p.m.
