Atkinson Elementary School fifth-graders Ashleigh Smitherman and Marissa Garland were honored at the Georgia Stock Market Game Luncheon, held at the Georgia Railroad Freight Depot in Atlanta recently.
The Atkinson students competed against students in grades 4-12 throughout Georgia. The Stock Market Game is a simulation where the students invest pretend money in the actual stock market. They create portfolios and buy or sell stocks according to trends. The luncheon honored the top winners from all over the state.
Cami Sullivan’s REACH class at Atkinson entered 10 teams of fourth and fifth-graders in the game. Each team in the game had to invest $100,000 in the New York Stock Exchange. Smitherman and Garland were the Coweta County winners for the fall season. With their initial $100,000 investment, Smitherman and Garland were able to make a profit of $23,628.00 in an eight-week period.
Dr. John Barge, State Superintendent of Schools, was keynote speaker at the luncheon, telling students “the lesson of economics helps shape our citizens of tomorrow.”
