Josiah Jorek of Pack 2293 won Overall Best of Show honors for his Lego-themed car as dozens of area Cub Scouts competed in the annual Coweta District Cub Scout Pinewood Derby.
Brodie Holand, also of Pack 2293, won Overall Speed Champion and Grant Bakkan of Pack 418 won Overall Most Unique for his car, which was designed to look like a brass bullet.
The event was held in the showroom of Toyota of Newnan, where Pack 897 of Crossroads United Methodist set up its track and assisted with the races. “Boy Scout Lady” Verna Funk – who co-chaired the derby with Allen Peeler – said Cubmaster David Neece, scout dad, Clint Barineau, Suzanne Rasmuson, James “Rooster” Riggins, Bill Bales, Cammy and Forrest Tidwell helped get the race off to a good start and thanked John Irvin from American Legion Pack 570 for retrieving the cars at the end of each race.
Funk also invited Walt Gutierrez, president of Toyota of Newnan, to compete in a Pinewood Derby race. Funk gave Gutierrez a kit so he could build his car, a black and white Toyota design that was the big winner in a race against other adult volunteers.
“What was nice about the day was that Toyota’s personnel helped judge the show cars, Walt donated all of the participation medallions that each boy and adult racer received, and I gave away free lollipops to the scouts and siblings for a smile.” Funk said. “Walt has already started thinking about a better way to set up parking for next year. “We must have done something right. Toyota has allowed the Boy Scouts of America to use his showroom for the Scouting for Food and now this.”
All trophies were given to the boys immediately following their respective ranks’ race. The trophies, furnished by Creative Awards in Sharpsburg, were designed by Funk and carried a patriotic theme. Funk coordinated the 10th Anniversary 9/11 Memory Walk and Remembrance Ceremony in Newnan, and said she wanted to keep the colors of the American Flag flying in honor of our Veterans and those members of the Armed Forces still serving our country.
