Joyful Praise Homeschool Choir paid tribute to veterans and active service men and women May 25 during their annual patriotic musical, this year titled “The Spirit of America.”

The performance was held at The Warehouse of First Baptist Church of Newnan, on Brown Street.

Each choir member, who range in age from 3-18, represented one of the 50 states by wearing a costume symbolizing their state. A student dressed as an orange juice box represented Florida while another donning a raisin box represented California.

“The parents really like the annual patriotic program because they can weave it into history studies at home,” said Karen Moore, director of the choir since its inception in 1998. The choir is made up entirely of homeschooled students from Coweta County and neighboring areas.

“I started this with my kids in mind,” said Moore. “I wanted a music program for them and other homeschoolers because I have a passion for kids and music.”

At the performance, Moore bid farewell to graduating senior Jennifer Pike, who has been a choir member for 12 years. Pike, a dancer for 13 years, developed routines and worked with dance groups for the choir musicals throughout high school.

“I grew up with the choir,” said Pike, 18. “I started when I was 6 years old and it’s where I first discovered that I enjoy teaching dance. It’s also where I discovered that I could be a soloist and major in voice. The choir has meant a lot to me.”

Pike plans on double majoring in voice and dance education at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, AZ.

After college, she hopes to start a dance, drama, and music program that travels around the United States performing Bible stories.

“This was another choir-inspired idea,” said Pike.

During the choir’s program, Pike sang “You Are Our Heroes” as a thank you to America’s heroes past and present.

She closed the program with a dance routine she created to the song, “Go Light Your World.” Choir members lit candles in honor of the states they represented.

The Joyful Praise Homeschool Choir rehearses on Wednesday afternoons at Grace Community Church on Roscoe Road in Newnan.
