19th annual Bedrock Classic approaching

by Wes Mayer

The Coweta County Sheriff's Office is now accepting participant registration for its annual golf tournament benefiting Project SA FE.

The golf tournament, the Bedrock Classic, will be held on Nov. 1 at Orchard Hills Golf Course south of Newnan. All proceeds of the tournament will go directly to Project SA FE (Students Are For Education), a course taught by school resource officers to all Coweta County fifth-grade students.

'All of the money raised by the tournament goes back to the kids of Coweta County, not the sheriff's office,' said Lt. Stephen Crook with the School Resource Unit.

Project SA FE is a program taught in all 21 elementary schools of Coweta County. Including Crook, there are six school resource officers who teach the course throughout the school year. The program is taught to all fifth-graders one day per week for 12 weeks, and on the side, courses are also taught to younger elementary school students.

According to Crook, each week of the program covers a different topic. These topics include - the consequences of using drugs, the dangers of gateway drugs like marijuana and alcohol, and help with self-esteem, stress, violence, gangs, Internet safety and the media. Crook also said school resource officers will role-play with students about different ways to say 'no.' During the tenth week of the program, all students are asked to write an essay.

'We ask them to write us a written commitment to stay drug-free,' Crook said. 'That's what the program is all about.'

Using their own bank account, separate from the Coweta County Sheriff's Office, Project SA FE is accountable for its own resources and provides T-shirts and certificates of completion to all the program's graduates, 1,800 to 2,000 students. In addition, the student who writes the best essay from each class will receive a medal, and the student who writes the best essay from each school will receive a leadership award trophy. According to Crook, Project SA FE is funded entirely by donations, and the Bedrock Classic golf tournament is the program's largest fundraiser.

The cost is $75 per individual or $300 per team. Families, businesses, churches, etc. may also sponsor a hole on the course for $100. Food will be provided by the Redneck Gourmet in Newnan, and drinks - all non-alcoholic - will be provided by Buffalo Rock. Steve Bedrosian, former Braves pitcher and former Coweta County Board of Education member, will kick off the tournament, which is named after him.

'Steve Bedrosian has graciously allowed us to use his name for 19 years,' Crook said. 'He is a great asset, and a great supporter of the Project SA FE program.'

The driving range will open at 9 a.m. and the tournament will begin at 9:30. Trophies will be awarded by Bedrosian and Coweta County Sheriff Mike Yeager to the winners of each flight, whoever lands the ball closest to the hole and hitter of the longest drive.

If you are interested in playing in the tournament or if you simply wish to donate, you may make checks payable to the Coweta County Sheriff's Office Project SA FE and mail them to the sheriff's office. Payment for competing in the tournament or sponsoring a hole is preferred in advance and will be accepted until Oct. 25, though all donations are accepted at any time.
