Tommy Thompson Center to host Senior Olympics

by Bradley Hartsell

For the second year in a row, the Tommy Thompson Senior Center in Newnan will give seniors a chance for activity and fun in the Senior Olympics.

The opening ceremonies commence July 29 and the games will continue until July 31. Next week’s three-day event will consist of numerous games from billiards to king’s in the corner to bingo. Each event will be scored and medaled for first, second, and third.

Activities Director Danette Martin says she expects perhaps as many as 30 seniors will be competing throughout the three days of the games. For some, physical participation may be only limited to bingo but Martin says those seniors are excited to compete nonetheless. Others, such as Annie Mae Newson, told Martin to “sign her up for everything.” Newson told Martin she might not be able to do all of it but she’s willing to try.

Many of the events are available to seniors every day at the center. The center offers many daily activities from bingo to Wii games, but the Senior Olympics allow for something innate in everybody — good natured competition.

Registration for the games is open until Friday. The Tommy Thompson Senior Center is located at 29 Hospital Rd. in Newnan. For more information call 770-683-8600.
