The atmosphere was all about camaraderie and friendly competition at the fourth annual Up In Smoke barbecue cook-off Saturday at the Coweta County Fairgrounds.
A total of 44 pro division teams and 22 backyard teams competed from all over the Southeast, including teams from Lake Placid, Fla., Eatonton, Ga., Douglas, McDonough, Perry and Cumming. The event is tied as the largest Florida Barbecue Association event of the year. It is the Georgia State Championship for the FBA and a 2009 Jack Daniels Pool qualifier.
The overall winner for the pro division teams was the Barbecue Crew. Second went to Jack's Old South, and Big Daddy Q took home third.
In the backyard division, first place was awarded to the Jasper Bar-B-Que Team. Second place went to Cross Creek Mountain Smokers. Dogwood Smokin' took third.
In the individual categories, Barbecue Crew took first place in chicken. First place in ribs was HoocheeQue. Barbecue Crew won first in pork, and first in brisket went to Big Daddy Q.
Members of the Smokin' Pigs Barbecue -- who are self-described as "a bunch of cops from Carrollton" -- participated for the second year in a row because they agree "this is one of the best [competitions] we've come to" in terms of the grounds, the organization and the temperatures, according to Billy Stuart.
Then others, like William and Stephanie Daley, who are newcomers to Newnan, dropped by the fairgrounds as willing partakers to enjoy the barbecue and weather.
The event also featured a "Fireman's Rodeo," a horseshoe tournament and a kids zone.
Proceeds benefit the Coweta Community Chest, which assists Cowetans with pressing needs and donates to various service organizations. For more information, visit cowetabbq.com.
