Orchids focus for Master Gardeners' Backyard Association

Orchids will be the focus for the Nov. 10 Backyard Association meeting organized by Coweta Master Gardeners and Coweta Extension Service.

Are you an avid hiker or just one who may enjoy a trek through the beautiful outdoors? Have you ever wondered upon a most delicate tiny flower that looks like a lady's slipper? If so, you have experienced the beauty of an orchid, note Master Gardeners.

Orchids are beautiful works of art that can be found throughout the world. They aren't limited to the traditional flowers worn by your mother or grandmother on special occasions.

The program "Orchids, Here, There and Everywhere" will be presented by Pete Furniss of Sweetbay Farm in Newnan. Furniss and his wife, Gail, are orchid experts who travel extensively to view orchids in their native environments and judge orchid competitions.

Furniss will share a PowerPoint presentation showing local orchid species, images of awarded orchids, and examples of beautiful exhibits at a number of shows.

After the presentation, he and Gail will discuss the various types of media used with orchids, offer growing tips and demonstrate how to re-pot a plant.

The Backyard Association is a free seminar held monthly at the Coweta County Fairgrounds Exhibit Hall.

The Nov. 10 meeting is at 7 p.m.

Call the Coweta County Extension Office on Pine Road at 770-254-2620 for reservations and to register for door prizes that include a few orchids provided by Mr. Furniss.
