The Car Guys Charity Cruise series of shows will begin its third season in the Junction Lanes location in Newnan this spring.
The series of shows, organized and hosted by emcees Charlie Filkins and Scott Sargeant, benefit a different charity each month. Held April through October in the parking lot of the bowling alley and Carmike Cinemas, the event features classic cars, food and drinks, kids activities and auctions.
"It really is a family type thing," said Sargeant.
In addition to raising money for Coweta non-profits, the shows also spotlight local talent from cheerleaders to musicians. Previously, the shows were held in other locations, and over the past ten years the events have collected $103,000 for charitable groups.
Sargeant said the community has really come to "expect" the shows. "It's amazing," he said of the way the public reacts and supports the series.
Sergeant and Filkins first met while working at a local car dealership. A common interest in cars led to "The Car Guys" TV show on cable, as well as lots of opportunities to emcee Coweta events. The pair can still be heard on the radio (Fun 101 FM).
While the 2012 shows will still be held on the second Saturday of each month, the times will be moved a bit earlier. The shows will run from 4-8 p.m.
There are no entry fees for car owners, and any money spent by families on activities or concessions goes to the designated charity of the month. Awards are presented for the car show. Trucks and motorcycles are welcome also.
Some of the charities to be assisted this year include Community Welcome House, The Mike Stokely Foundation, Camp Dream and The Rutledge Center of Newnan.
Filkins and Sargeant lend their time and talent to many community events and see firsthand the generosity of Cowetans. "This community has a huge heart," noted Filkins.
The success of the Car Guys Charity Cruise Car Series is also due to business sponsorships. For those interested in sponsorships, call 770-616-0449 or email to charlie@thecarguys.tv .
The Filkins and Sargeant families also pitch in to help organize and man the shows. "We enjoy being part of the community," said Sargeant.
