Georgia factory index up for 4th month

Morris News Service - ATLANTA – Factories in the Peach State remain busy, according to the Georgia Purchasing Managers Index released Tuesday. The index rose 3.1 points in April to 63.8, the fourth month of straight increases. Generally, a reading of 50 or higher predicts expansion in the manufacturing sector. The national index stands at 54.8, up 1.4 points in April.
Plants are getting more new orders for their products, and they're increasing their production lines to keep up, according to figures released by the Econometric Center at Kennesaw State University that compiles the Georgia index. That increased business isn't translating into new jobs. Employment showed a net decrease, according to the school's survey of factory managers across the state in charge of buying supplies for their plants.
