Jeff Ledford, Georgia's Real Estate Commissioner, recently addressed the Newnan-Coweta Board of Realtors at its October meeting held at Ten East Washington.
In the position of Real Estate Commissioner for the state of Georgia, Ledford oversees the day-to-day operations of the state agency responsible for implementing the license law regulating Georgia's more than 100,000 real estate brokers and salespersons, and the law regulating Georgia's 7,000 real estate appraisers.
Ledford has worked with the Georgia Real Estate Commission (GREC) since 2004.
He is an active participant with the Association of Real Estate License Law Officials (ARELLO), whose membership includes real estate regulatory agencies in the states and provinces of the United States and Canada and other nations in Africa, Asia, Australia, and Europe. He currently serves as chair of the Examination Accreditation Committee and is vice-chair of the Mortgage Advisory Group. He also serves on the Investigator Resource Committee, Law and Regulation Committee, and the Program Committee.
Ledford informed the group that the GREC has currently approved funding for two new courses to be taught statewide. One will be taught in the classroom and the other is the first-ever GREC online course.
Ledford said that budget cuts have affected the GREC as it has other segments of the economy. Because of vacancies in examiner positions, there is a backlog of more than 1,000 cases waiting for hearings.
The most common violations brought before the commission are mishandling of earnest money, operation outside area of expertise, and property management issues.
He also addressed social media outlets such as Facebook as used in real estate. He stressed that agents must make sure they make all the proper disclosures as outlined by Georgia real estate license law.
