Main Street merchants observe Independents Week

The merchant members of Newnan’s Main Street program are observing Independents Week this week.

Independents Week is a nationwide campaign that aims to engage local independent businesses and community members together in celebrating the spirit of entrepreneurism. 

It’s a chance to join with hundreds of other communities across the nation and celebrate the freedoms and opportunities independent businesses provide. 

Several special events have been planned for the week. On Monday there were morning pledges at 9:30 a.m. followed by a scavenger hunt and music on the steps of the historic Coweta County Courthouse. The pledges were repeated Tuesday, followed by lawn games and music on the courthouse steps.

Among activities for the rest of this week:

Today there will be morning pledges at 9 a.m. on the Court Square. The Main Street-sponsored community farmers market will be held in the parking lot behind the Coweta County Administration Building on East Broad Street, and there will be music on the courthouse steps.

Thursday will bring “plein-aire” painting with artists working on projects around the Court Square 8 a.m. to noon. Enjoy music on the courthouse steps at 5 p.m. prior to the annual Newnan Independence Day Parade at 6 p.m. The parade will precede the community fireworks venue in Drake Stadium.

On Friday there will be morning pledges at 9:30 a.m., there will be music on the courthouse steps and it will be Family Picnic Day — bring your own or pick up food at a local participating restaurant. It is the First Friday, and shops will be open until 8 p.m. 

Saturday brings the regular monthly Market Day around the Court Square, and Pickin’ on the Square musicians will be performing. There will be a drawing for a raffle at 2 p.m. on the courthouse steps.

All the Main Street Newnan activities will be centered near the west side of the historic Coweta County Courthouse. Participate for the raffle for prizes in participating shops and restaurants all week, with the drawing for two lucky winners Saturday at the conclusion of Market Day.
