After more than a year in construction delays, the Newnan Centre is expected to open the first week of June.

What started as a dream is slowly becoming a reality as Newnan Convention Center Authority members held their first official tour of the city’s nearly completed multi-use meeting facility.

After meeting at city hall for years, members of the Convention Center Authority held their first meeting at the Newnan Centre, located of Lower Fayetteville Road adjacent to the Coweta County School System’s Centre for Performing and Visual Arts.

The Newnan Centre board room, like the rest of the facility, remains unfinished, so authority members sat out in a hallway using folding chairs. The windows are in, the wallboard is up and members even took a moment to write their names on the unfinished walls. There were a lot of proud smiles among the authority members.

“This is really going to be a cool place,” said authority Chairman Parks Avery. “You will really be proud.

“We are going to start seeing a ton of change all at once,” he added. “Everything is going to start coming in at a quick pace.”

Avery said the pavilion, which will be located halfway between the Newnan Centre and the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts, won’t be completed by the time the facility opens — which is now scheduled as the first week of June.

“That’s not the end of the world,” he said. “And we will be meeting in June in our new boardroom.”

Overall, the complex includes a main building, a tiered outside amphitheater that can seat about 1,200, and a 1,000-square-foot pavilion. Covered walkways lead from the main building to the pavilion, which is heated but not air-conditioned, and also to the Centre.

The main building houses a business center and boardroom, which could be used as a bridal room for weddings. It also will have a full kitchen, various sized tables, different seating arrangements, risers for stages, and a dance floor.

The main room can be divided into four different sizes to accommodate various functions.

Over the past few years, Avery and his fellow Newnan Convention Center Authority members started making plans and watched ground break in August 2011.

But in the early months of 2012, the contractor ended up having cash flow problems. The planned opening in April 2012 started getting pushed.

Within another couple of months, contractor D.Dean and Associates was fired and worked stopped. Then started negotiations with the insurance company that bonded D.Dean to recoup funds and get a new contractor. Headley Construction of Newnan was named the new contractor and is completing the work.
