Joe Guerra recipient of 2014 Golden Eagle Award

Joe Guerra was the recipient of this year’s Coweta Golden Eagle Award by the Boy Scouts of America’s Flint River Council.

The Flint River Council held the 2014 dinner and awards ceremony recently at the Newnan Centre. Master of Ceremonies was Coweta County Sheriff Mike Yeager, who was the 2013 Golden Eagle Award recipient. Will Harper, a boy scout from Troop 2193, also told stories about his favorite experiences in scouts.

Guerra, president and CEO of Sequoia Golf, was honored for his leadership, dedication, and years of service to Coweta County, Yeager said. Guerra, after accepting the reward, said he was lucky to be raised by such great parents.

“You don’t get to choose your parents,” Guerra said in his acceptance speech. “I had the combination of a mother who was an angel, and a father who was a marine. The combination of those two worked out pretty darn well.”

Guerra thanked his family – his wife who was in London, his two daughters and his son who was in New York. Guerra talked about how he got into Boy Scouts through his son, who became an Eagle Scout growing up. Guerra also thanked his golf buddies, business friends with the company and the many heros at the dinner who donated to the Boy Scouts and the Flint River Council.

He spoke about how every community needs young and high performance people as the future leaders.

“When you think about scouting, they’re the greatest candidates possible,” Guerra said.

Guerra said it is up to the parents to pave the way for the next generation and set the best examples possible. With the experience that Boy Scouts receive, he said he believes they are the young people who will make things happen in the future.
