Job seeking, employment assistance available

by Clay Neely

Newnan First United Methodist Church hosted its monthly Job Networking Ministry with guest speakers David Galloway, administrator for Ansley Park Health & Rehabilitation, and Allen Hurd, from the Georgia Department of Labor.

The initial focus of this meeting was placed on the burgeoning health care industry in Newnan, which David Galloway addressed.

Galloway gave an overview on the functions of Ansley Park Health & Rehabilitation and expressed the need for registered RN’s, LPN’s and certified nursing assistants among the expanding health care center.

“The health industry is exploding in the area and we’re all fighting for good employees,” said Galloway.

Allen Hurd gave a rousing and informative speech on the merits of part-time work. While he acknowledges that most people are looking for full-time employment, he urged those who are not seeing any positive results from their searches to not discount what part-time work has to offer.

Hurd cited that the second largest employer in the United States is Kelly Services, a temporary agency. He expressed that most employers are currently more willing to hire part-time employees due to the start up cost of hiring a full-time employee.

“Hiring a full-time employee can mean a $31,000 investment for a company,” said Hurd.

“There is always work for someone who wants to work,” he reiterated, citing the numerous job training programs available in the area and the W.I.A. (Workforce Investment Act).

Two other local job networking programs were mentioned at the meeting.

JobSeekers of Peachtree City meets every Friday morning at 7:45 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Peachtree City while Goodwill Southern Rivers also holds their Job Club every Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Newnan West Career Center, 228 Bullsboro Drive in Newnan.
